Straight Lines and Curves on Flickr.

The straight vertical lines of the Curtiss-Wright (orig. Ampico) Building built in 1923 are shown up by the sloping glass curtain wall of SOM’s 1974 tower 9 West 57th. Some criticized the latter building’s curved facade for destroying the streetwall along 57th Street. Indeed, immediately below the frame of this image, the raw, unwindowed side of the Curtiss-Wright building is exposed where another building once abutted it. The net effect is that it looks like Cross & Cross’s building has been pantsed by modernism.

Dusk falls over Washington Square on an unseasonably warm April evening. The Washington Square Arch is brightly lit through the trees just at center-left. 1 Fifth Avenue towers above the square, marking a new phase in the city’s march to the north.

Thousands of New Yorkers crowded into the World Financial Center Winter Garden Saturday to watch a dance performance presented by The New York Chinese Cultural Center. The performance celebrated the 2012 Lunar New Year, which is the Year of the Dragon.
